St Anthony claim 6 Martyrs Cup

PANJIM, JUNE 3 – St Anthony Sports Club, Colva defeated Goa Velha Sports Club 6-5 via tie-breaker to win the “6 Martyrs” Inter-Village tournament, organised by Agassaim Sports Club, at Agassaim ground. Both teams started off with some quick moves but were unable to convert their many opportunities into goals till the breather. However, in the second session, Sidroy Afonso put Goa Velha into the lead with an excellent finish after getting better of the rival defender. Stung by the setback, St Anthony went on the offensive to equalise the score. They managed to do it in the closing stages when Goa Velha defender handled the ball inside the box. Referee promptly awarded penalty, which was easily converted by Nelson Gomes. In the resultant tie-breaker, Nelson Gomes, Piedade
Fernandes, Clyde Pacheco, Rose Rodrigues and Cletus Pacheco were on target for Colva while Melroy D’Silva, Anthony D’Souza, Joy Gonsalves and Marlon Gonsalves found the net for the losers. Sidroy Afonso’s spot kick was saved by Colva goalkeeper. The winners took home Rs 20,000 while the runners-up had to be content with Rs 15,000. Besides, the following prizes were awarded: Best Goalkeeper – Nicholas D’Silva (Goa Velha SC), Best Defender – Cletus Pacheco (St Anthony SC), Best Half – Joy Gonsalves (Goa Velha SC), Best Forward – Sidroy Afonso (Goa Velha SC), Man of the Match – Nelson Gomes (Colva SC). Francisco Silveira, St Andre MLA and Parliamentary Secretary was the chief guest and gave way the prizes.
