St. Peter Boys lift Vailankani Cup

PANJIM: St. Peter Boys Tivai Vaddo, Calangute defeated Vasco VII 2-1 in the finals of 2nd Queen Vailankani Cup all-Goa 7-a-side one- day football tournament organised by Queen Vailankanni Boys, Calangute at Calangute Association ground, Sunday.
In all, 18 teams participated. In an exciting final watched by a large Sunday crowd Vasco took the lead in the 5th minute off a powerful shot from Navid Sheikh from outside the penalty box.
Two minutes later Tivai Vaddo levelled through Anthony Silveira off a Joelif Simoes pass. At lemon break the score was 1-1.
Changing over, the teams worked hard and in the dying minute, Camilo Rodrigues scored the match-winner for Tivai Vaddo off
a rebound from Francis Coutinho’s shot.
Earlier, the organisers Kevin D'Souza and William Fernandes introduced the chief guest Agnelo Fernandes, ex-MLA to the teams. Fr Cipriano da Silva, parish priest of St Alex Church, Calangute and Ana Maria C D'Souza, sarpanch of Calangute were the special guests. They gave away the prizes.
The winners were awarded Rs 25,000 and trophy while the runners-up had to settle for Rs 18,000 and trophy.
Individual prizes: First scorer of final Navid Sheikh (Vasco VII ). Best gaolkeeper Vinayak Khopal (Vasco VII ). Most Promising player of final Camilo Rodrigues (Tivai Vaddo Calangute ). Best disciplined team Cuncolim Youth.
Alirio Lobo, GFA Executive Committee member and secretary of Calangute Association, Alex Fernandes, president of Calangute Association, Jerry D'souza, sports secretary of Calangute Association were present.
Melwyn Barretto and Anthony Carvalho from Qatar supported the event. Polly Pereira compered. William Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks.
