As rightly pointed by our determined Health Minister, we have the Goa Medical Council, the Goa Dental Council and soon the Goa Nursing Council will be constituted. My request to you is to also constitute the Goa Medical Laboratory Technologist Council, to complete the full circle in Goa's medical fraternity, as the medical laboratory technicians are the common link between the doctors, nurses, patients and also the health conscious people of Goa.
By forming the MLTC, you will be able to standardise the working of all laboratories, be it government or private. Stanley Menezes, Chinchinim/Sada
Providing lip service
One of the members present for the special Gram Sabha meeting of the Velim Panchayat held on August 15, demanded the resignation of all the elected members and rightly so because the present Government failed to acknowledge the very existence of the democratically elected body and re-activated the land acquisition process for the Cutbona Fishing jetty expansion (which was kept on hold by the previous Government) without revoking the hold order and without any intimation to the Panchayat.
This demands for the resignation of the elected body, had nothing to do with the performance of the elected body, but was to express displeasure for the actions of the present Government for showing total disregard to the democratically elected Panchayat body, and to denounce the lip service provided to the Panchayat Raj Act by the past and present Governments. Glocerio Fernandes, Velim
Dhavalikar’s woes
Sudhin Dhavalikar should first put enforce discipline on the roads. Law enforcing agencies should be vigilant and stop all accidents. Helmets are not required at all if everyone of us drives diligently and follow all rules laid down by the Government. The licenses of two wheelers, who use the vehicle as cargo carriers, should be cancelled immediately. All those labour class workers who use old vehicle and drive them recklessly should be shown the prison door. Between 11 am and 4 pm all public buses should be stopped and alcohol content of drivers should be checked and if found drunk they should be sent to prison and tried in court and punished. All youngsters who have no license or have learner's license and use vehicles should be jailed. If all these are followed there is definitely no need of having helmets. We should strongly oppose helmets. I am writing this letter with reference to the letter by Sandhya Bhave " Dhavlikar's priorities" Ann Marie Fernandes, Calangute
Wasteful expenditure
The current one lakh twenty thousand beneficiaries under the Dayanand Social Security Scheme have not received their monthly old age pension benefits since June this year.
This sorry state of affairs augurs badly for a government which is squandering money where not necessary, and announcing populist schemes without being able to pay timely benefits to those needy beneficiaries. The Dayanand Social Security scheme was launched in 2001 as an initiative under “Freedom from Hunger” project.
How does the Chief Minister justify this wanton neglect of the poorest section of the community? Good governance is about financial accountability which the Goa Government does not seem to care about.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar should ensure fiscal accountability at all cost by ensuring that wasteful expenditure is curbed and that the State exchequer does not reach a point of bankruptcy, where even the poor are kept starving without their old age pension benefits. Aires Rodrigues, Ribandar
Irrelevant picture
I fail to understand the relevance of your front page picture in your edition dated August 18, under the slug, ‘ Star Talk’. Actually, who was trying to say what ? And what was the message for us readers? Be kind enough and at least use a picture that will make sense to us , your Goan readers. Do you expect me to pay Rs. 3 for something that does not make sense ? Martin D’souza, Pilerne
Trends in Herald !
It was nice reading Nishitha Nair Shrivastava’s article “Travelling on their own terms’. It makes us women feel more special. However, it would have been nice if we had the statistics from travel agencies about the number of single Goan ladies going on a holiday. Marie Lourdes, Chinchinim
Guilty cops
Once a cop is found guilty of serious crimes --- planting drugs and threatening to book innocent victims under false cases --- the cops should be immediately suspended and a time bound inquiry should be conducted against them to either dismiss or reinstate them in the service, as per the inquiry report.
Secondly the suspended cops should never be allowed to head any Police Station, Out-Post or Department cell. In clear terms, the suspended cops once reinstated should be prevented from directly handling public matters. Julius Carvalho, Dubai
