MARGAO: Margao’s old fish market, right behind the imposing Margao Municipal building, is one amongst the three vacant open spaces in the heart of the Commercial capital, considered for multi-storey parking.
A mechanical or hydraulic parking lot was mooted in the past on the land admeasuring 1,200-odd sq mts in a bid to address the burning traffic problem plaguing the city.
Surprisingly, a plan drawn up by the civic body has proposed not just a parking lot on the land in question, but utilisation of a floor for commercial use, including offices. Incidentally, the plan envisages parking for only 85 four-wheelers in the plot after development, including 40-odd vehicular parking for the offices to be housed in the parking lot.
Sadly, there’s no provision in the plan for two-wheeler parking in the lot. This has raised a pertinent question whether two-wheeler riders visiting the commercial offices inside the parking lot would have to park the two-wheelers outside on the road, defeating the very purpose of constructing a multi-storey parking lot.
An MMC engineer had given a brief outline of the parking lot plan to the city fathers at a special meeting of the civic body last month. MMC Chairperson Dayanand Deulkar, however, says no decision yet has been taken on the plan till date. “The civic body has only drawn up the multi-storey parking plan with the help of an architect before I took over office. But the plan has not been thrown open for discussions and deliberations till date. No decision has been taken so far”, informed MMC Chairperson Dayanand Deulkar.
Former MMC Chairperson Savio Coutinho also raised eyebrows over the plan, making provision for commercial offices in the proposed parking lot. “The civic body have always maintained that all the three open spaces at old fish market, pick-up stand and old bus stand should be utilised only for multi-storey parking. The reason is that only cent per cent utilisation of the three open spaces for parking may help overcome the parking problem faced in the heart of the city. Provision for 85 cars in the proposed parking lot at the old fish market, may fail to serve the purpose of the proposed lot”, Coutinho said.
A section of city fathers and civic officials opine that the multi-purpose parking lots should be built by
the government agency such as GSUDA and hand over the same to the same to the civic body for maintenance. “There’s a battle for every inch of space in the heart of the town for parking. There ought to be optimum utilisation of the open spaces for multi-storey parking lots which will help de-congest the city and also de-notify vehicular parking on roads”, remarked a city father.
